Unrecorded H2C(P) censor and date range extension

Postby CottleN » Mon Nov 28, 2022 3:48 pm

With reference to handstamp type H2C(P) Morenweiser and Burrows (2020) list six censor numbers used with a date range of 19 June 1940 to 27 November 1940.

I have recently acquired a postcard sent from Wolverhampton to Porto, Portugal which is postmarked 28 December 1940 and with censor handstamp H2C(P)/59 (see attached scan).

Censor number 59 is not one of the six listed by M & B and the postmark date extends the usage range by a month.

Presumably this card was sent by surface mail although the overseas postcard rate in December 1940 was 2d not 2 1/2d:

Good evening

1 - Is it a post card? (we do not know the backs of this card).

2 - It seems that the addressee has the same name as a known philatelist/philatelic dealer in the 1930s acc. to Portugal Filatelico Nº76, Setembro-Outubro de 1938 and also acc. to MACHADO, Paulo Sá (1995). Vultos da Filatelia I [...].

3 - Postage rate - 2 1/2d - surface post cards, rest of the world from 1 May on acc. to WAWRUKIEWICZ (2000). Great Britain Domestic and International Postal Rates and Fees 1871-1999 [...]. According to this study the 2d rate was applyed to Commonwealth and United States also from 1st May on - page 21.

4 - Handstamp - H2C - exactly as you said acc. to MORENWEISER and BURROWS (2020:Vol I:121)

5 - Handstamp similar to type GB3C3 however not exactly the same design acc. to COLLEY (2016:289). World War Two Censor Marks [...] 2nd Edition

Good evening,

Thank you for the answer.
Here you have another comment about this subject.

With or without pictures doesn't matter, acc. to "Regulations of Execution of the Universal Postal Union", article 113, 4 - Universal Postal Union Convention, Buenos Aires, 1939.
In French language (offical UPU language) we can read the following "keywords" inside the official text:
"Carte Postale Simples... émanant de l'industrie privée... verso et de la partie gauche du recto... des photographies peuvent y être collées..." etc.
In English/American text - "Single post card... private manufacture... back and left half of the front... illustrations, photographs... may be affixed thereto..." etc.

This means it is a "post card".
