Portuguese Colonies

A place to discuss censored mail from World War II

Portuguese Colonies

Another area that pops up on eBay from time to time and for which I have no decent reference, includes Portual's Atlantic possessions: Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde Islands. Wolter is pathetic in this area, and I know of no other literature. Can anyone point me to a decent article or book?

If there isn't a decent treatment of civil censorship in these areas, perhaps we should compile one.

Hi Dann

This is a very interesting area but, as far as I know, there is no reference publications.....but Mr Joaquim Sousa Lobo made a great job online :D

Please, check out these 5 links.

http://www.cfportugal.pt/index.php?opti ... 7&Itemid=3
http://www.cfportugal.pt/index.php?opti ... 8&Itemid=3
http://www.cfportugal.pt/index.php?opti ... 9&Itemid=3
http://www.cfportugal.pt/index.php?opti ... 0&Itemid=3
http://www.cfportugal.pt/index.php?opti ... 1&Itemid=3

Unfortunately, the author does not deal with censorship in Cabo Verde Islands during WWII, but in the same website you can find a very interesting article about censorship in Cabo Verde Islands and Portuguese Guinea during WWI

Best regards

Hi Luz,

Many thanks for that list. I really do appr3eciate it.

he fact that we have always been a British/US-centric group has resulted in our not giving much of the rest of the world its due. Perhaps we can follow on from this significant make this significant step in broadening our coverage.

Good evening,

Dear dannmayo,

Here we have an explanation for this letter.

1 - Surface letter sent from Cape Vert islands to USA. Sender address - Achada ?? (1)

1.1 - No postage rate prepaid. Postmark T (2) meaning that de sender did not pay the prepaid postage rate - 1$75 to 20g (3)

2 - Censor cachet - M. C. / C. M. P. T. / Cabo Verde / 3 applied in Cape Vert islands meaning Ministério das Colónias / Censura Militar Postal e Telegráfica (4)

3 - Censor label dark rose/Cabo Verde - Aberto pela Censura Militar Cabo Verde (5)

4 - Flamme with datestamp 14.1.45 - on transit VIA Lisbon (european notation of calendar)

5 - Censorship label - 5134 USA. New York (6)

6 - Postage due stamp - 10c (7)

NOTES (With sources and bibliography as quoted above)

(1) - Achada [de Igreja]?; Achada [de Santo António]?; ?? (Writen on back of the cover)

(2) - Postmark T - Universal Postal Union Convention , Detailed Regulation, Art. 145, 1.

(3) - Postage rate - 1$75 to 20g - acc. to Wawrukievicz and Beecher (1996:286). U.S. International Postal Rates, 1872-1976

(4) - Magalhães (Setembro 1977:18).

(5) - Ditto (4)

(6) - Broderick and Dann Mayo (1980:31). Civil Censorship in the United States During Worl War II

(7) - Acc. Universal Postal Union Convention, Buenos Aires, 1939. Title 3, Article 36 - Charges on unprepaid "...double the amount of the missing postage...".
This means 1$75=5c
5c X 2 = 10c. with an USA 10c. postage due pre-obliterated(?) stamp.

ADDITION to my last post

Dear dannmayo,

Reading the back of the cover... I saw what seems to be ACHADA Luz(?) as a sender address.

Let's see what the "sources" said for this:

1 - Post offices - none inside the 1940 official checklist.

2 - Place names - acc. to the following 1952 chorographic dictionary:
Dicionário Corográfico do Arquipélago de Cabo Verde, by Álvaro Lereno, issued by [the offical office] Agência Geral do Ultramar

13 pages with more than 200 place names ACHADA xyz (where xyz is the surname)
As a reference in page 21 there are 17, in page 22 there are 26... in page 32 there are 23...etc.

Here we have those ones belonging to the civil parish N. S. da Luz - they are 7.
N. S. means Nossa Senhora - Our Lady in English.

NOMENCLATURE USED HERE
NAME of place or region - Island / Council / Civil parish

ACHADA BAIXO - Maio / Maio / N. S. da Luz
ACHADA BALACUSTA (Achada Vale da Custa) - S. Tiago / Praia / N. S. da Luz (region)
ACHADA BALEIA - S. Tiago / Praia / N. S. da Luz (region)
ACHADA CATIVO - S. Tiago / Praia / N. S. da Luz
ACHADA DOCE - Maio / Maio / N. S. da Luz
ACHADA LAMA - S. Tiago / Praia / N. S. da Luz (region)
ACHADA PORTAL - S. Tiago / Praia / N. S. da Luz (region)
